Largest Carnival Cruise Ship Ever Slated For September Debut
Story from USA Today

discount caribbean cruisesGood news, Carnival fans: It works!

The 130,000-ton Carnival Dream -- the biggest Carnival cruise ship ever built -- successfully completed sea trials this week in preparation for its Sept. 21 debut.

The 3,646-passenger vessel, the first of a new class at the line, is now back at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, near Trieste, for finishing work.

The Carnival Dream will boast such new-for-Carnival Cruises concepts as an indoor/outdoor café and entertainment venue called the Ocean Plaza, and cantilevered whirlpools that extend out over the ship’s sides. The vessel also will have new accommodation categories including "cove balconies" that are closer to the water line and five-berth, two-bathroom cabins aimed at families.

The Dream is about 15% larger than the 113,000-ton, 3,006-passenger Carnival Splendor, the largest Carnival ship currently afloat. It's scheduled to enter service in Europe on Sept. 21 operating a series of Mediterranean cruises before repositioning to New York for a pair of eight-day cruises on Nov. 15 and 23. The ship will then head to Port Canaveral, Fla., to sail year-round seven-day Caribbean cruises.
Best Picks For River Cruises
Reuters

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Some cash-conscious travelers are taking to water this summer for their holidays, discovering river cruising holidays where their boat is their hotel and they wake up with a new view every day.

Cruise website CruiseCritic.co.uk has come up with a list of the top 10 rivers for cruising in 2009.

"With the current economy, traveling around Europe -- or most places for that matter -- just isn't cheap anymore. All those little expenses really add up," said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.co.uk. "With river cruising, most costs are paid up front, so it's easier to budget."

1. Danube

A great choice for first-timers. Travel from Germany to the Black Sea, visiting Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. Cruise lines which operate on the Danube include Peter Deilmann Cruises, Viking River Cruises and Uniworld.

2. Duoro

The River Douro travels from Spain through the rural scenery of northern Portugal to the city of Porto, visiting restored palaces, places of pilgrimage, cultural centers and vineyards. Uniworld and CroisiEurope are among the cruise lines which operate on the River Duoro.

3. Yangtze

A cruise on this great river combines the opportunity to see some spectacular scenery, including the Three Gorges, experience modern China, and visit some of the country's great historic landmarks, such as the Great Wall, Forbidden Palace and the site of the Terracotta Army. Viking River Cruises and Avalon Waterways are some of the operators which sail the Yangtze.

4. Rhine

The Rhine offers a huge choice of cruises as it flows from the Alps into the North Sea, through Switzerland, Germany, France and Holland. It also links up with cruises on the Moselle and Danube rivers. Many cruise lines -- including Swan Hellenic River Cruises and Peter Deilmann River Cruises -- offer Rhine cruises.

5. Rhone

River Rhone cruises travel through Provence and the south of France, taking in an area renowned for its fine wines and culinary delights. Options for Rhone trips include Swan Hellenic River Cruises and French Country Waterways.

6. Nile

Visit the sights of ancient Egypt, such as the Pyramids and Sphinx, Valley of the Kings and Temples of Ramses. Also experience some of African wildlife. Nile cruise operators include Discover Egypt and Blue Water Holidays.

7. Murray

Cruise through Australia's outback, and see million-year-old gorges, golden sandstone cliffs towering over blue-green lagoons and majestic, red-gum forests under endless blue skies. Cruise operators include Blue Water Holidays and Captain Cook Cruises.

8. Volga

Travel the waterways of the tsars, the scenic rivers, canals and lakes that connect Russia's two old imperial capitals, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Cruise lines operating along the Volga include All Russia Cruises and Uniworld.

9. Mekong River

An exotic cruise through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand takes in some of South East Asia's ancient cities, temples and natural wonders. Cruise lines in this region include Pandaw River Cruises.

10. St. Lawrence Seaway

Flowing from the Great Lakes that border the United States and Canada, the St. Lawrence River and Ottawa River pass through incredible scenery and take in two of Canada's most fascinating cities -- Montreal and Ottawa. Options include cruises from Titan HiTours.

seabourn cruisesTHE JEWEL IN THE CROWN
Notes from the Seabourn Odyssey
Vanessa Lee

26 JUN 2009: Vanessa Lee publisher and CEO, Cruise and Travel Lifestyles and president, Cruise Strategies which represents The Yachts of Seabourn in Canada, is aboard the Seabourn Odyssey for its naming ceremony and launch in Venice. We are delighted and privileged that Vanessa agreed to provide our readers a firsthand account of the ceremonies.

Setting a new benchmark in ultra luxury

Seabourn Odyssey is a gem. A yacht of such exquisite rarity she will no doubt be cherished by her discriminating guests for years to come.

After a sunset naming ceremony on June 24, in the fabulous city of Venice, she has now set sail on her maiden voyage on fabulous Seabourn Cruise deals.

As her full capacity of 450 guests, acting as godparents for "their" yacht, watched in delight, a massive bottle of Italian prosecco whizzed down a zip line and smashed on cue.

The ceremony was held on Decks eight and nine in the central pool area affording excellent vantage points for all and was followed by a magical fireworks display which illuminated the Venetian night sky.

The atmosphere on board has been electric both for the preview cruise for members of the press and many of Seabourn's global travel agent partners, and also with the arrival yesterday of the yacht's first guests, many of whom are repeat clients.

The consensus of opinion was that the Odyssey is a huge, huge hit. She truly is breathtaking and I would describe her as bold, beautiful, striking and sensual.

The public rooms on discount Seabourn Cruises are gorgeous. They are chic and sophisticated and clearly great attention has been paid to detail and quality. The ship has a tactile quality to her, exudes sex appeal and is full of innovative and thoughtful design.

Leather has been used extensively throughout for bar stools, arm chairs, couches and dining chairs. Headboards in many suites have leather and wood accents as do the elevators.

One of my favorite rooms is The Restaurant which is nothing less than glorious. It has an art deco style, an impressive main walkway, fabulous chandeliers and innovative high dining tables for larger groups at either end of the room. The room is cleverly partitioned by lit columns and gauzy white drapes. The middle part of the dining space has a two storey ceiling and a wooden floor whilst the other two sections are carpeted and are one storey.

The room is calm and tranquil. The service is excellent as is the cuisine. In fact, I think this may have been the finest service and food I have ever experienced on my many Seabourn voyages. A remarkable feat when one considers the staff had only taken delivery of the yacht last week.

The crew and staff deserve heaps of praise for all they accomplished in such a short time and their team spirit, cohesiveness, attitude and the pride in their work was evident and a delight to see.

Celebrity chef Charlie Palmer (of Aureole fame) was on board and spoke with us about his successful five year collaboration with luxury Seabourn Cruises and their executive chef, Tony Egger.

To quote Chef Palmer, the kitchen, which in fact is two mirror image kitchens for superior service and à la minute preparation, is "tricked out".

Palmer said his relationship with Seabourn was "about making great food no matter where it is". He believes the signature dishes on board the Odyssey are comparable to the cuisine his restaurants can provide on land. An impressive comment and one to which I can attest as being accurate.

Another favorite spot was the Observation Bar on Deck 10 forward. This newly created space for Seabourn works very well. It is a multi-use lounge with a lovely square bar in the centre of the room offering a 270-degree forward facing view. Entertainment is provided by a pianist and it is ideal for pre dinner cocktails and is a lively spot after dinner.

The Colonnade is also a new venue for Seabourn. Another stunningly designed room it is used for all meals and is casual. Buffet lunches and breakfasts are offered along with cooked to order items from the open kitchen. Dinners are served restaurant style by reservation and offer different theme evenings. There is also al fresco dining with outdoor seating for 122, offering almost as many seats as the 150 inside.

Seabourn Square is the innovative concierge area which has quickly become the meeting place on board. Apparently the brainchild of Carnival Corp. chairman, Mickey Arison, it works seamlessly and guests can make spa, dinner and shorex bookings here. It incorporates guest services of all kinds, including destination services staff, a library, eight desktop computers, ipods and netbooks to take to one's suite.

A coffee bar, full bar service and the ship's boutiques are also accessible. There is ample and comfortable seating and a quiet terrace is also aft of this space. In fact, many decks, offer numerous quiet sitting areas suitable for sunning, reading, or conversation.

Outside The Club (a Seabourn favorite) on Deck five there is a second pool, two whirlpools and lounge chairs.

The suites are beautifully designed and furnished and 90% have verandas. Many are typical Seabourn suites of 300 square feet but now have spacious verandas with ample seating. The suites are comfortable and beautifully furnished and the bathrooms offer two sinks and a separate tub and shower.

Seabourn has added fabulous Penthouse Suites, Owner's Suites and two Signature Suites, as well as the large (914 sq ft) Wintergarden Suites which boast two verandas of 214 sq ft.

There are many other public rooms and facilities too numerous to mention including an impressive 11,400 square foot Spa over two floors, which was being finished as we boarded.

The Seabourn Odyssey is a remarkable achievement in luxury ship building. Giving new meaning to the descriptive "ultra luxury", and setting a new benchmark, Seabourn has aspired to immensely high standards in the build and design process of this yacht and has absolutely surpassed all expectations, possibly including their own.

Seabourn president Pamela Conover and her team should momentarily bask in the accolades and acclamation they are receiving before moving on to bring out the sister ship to Odyssey, the Seabourn Sojourn in June 2010 and then a third ship, yet to be named, in spring 2011.

Bravo, Seabourn.

Gloomy Economy Means Clear Skies For Travelers
Story from the Northwestern

Those who can swing a vacation this year may find there’s rarely been a more economical time to travel, say area consultants. Prices on everything from cruise cabins to hotel rooms to airplane seats have fallen as companies compete to fill their spaces during the economic slowdown, said Lynn Paulus, manager at Travel Leaders in Oshkosh.

carnival cruises“Rates are low right now,” she said. “Airlines need to fill seats and if they have to drop prices to do that, they will. It’s the same with hotels, resorts and attractions.”

Even travel that is traditionally regarded as the most expensive, such as Europe, is lower than usual. For example, she said, it’s possible this summer to fly from Appleton to Paris for $800 to $900 per person, compared to $1,200 to $1,300 during previous years. Many companies offering European river cruises are also running specials, including two-for-one deals, to attract more vacationers, said Jody Piotter, branch manager at Fox World Travel in Oshkosh.

Ocean cruises have also fallen in price this summer compared to previous years because many of the cruise lines had ships scheduled and are now scrambling to fill them, she said.

“Prices are incredible this year,” she said. “That might change next year, though, as the cruise companies adjust to the economy.”

A cruise is generally an economical way to vacation during any year because all meals are included, she said. Cruisers can save even more money by selecting Mexican, cheap Caribbean cruises, or discount Alaska cruises, choosing an inside cabin and booking the trip in September through November, Piotter said.

Other tips for vacationing on the cheap include booking trips during off-peak travel times of the year, and booking flights during mid-week. Airfare tends to be lowest for those flights that depart late in the day and return early in the morning, Paulus said. Tickets should be purchased 14 to 21 days in advance for the best prices.

Look for all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean, which include food and drinks. Domestic airfare is currently very economical, Paulus said. For example, she said, round-trip tickets for Las Vegas are pricing as low as $200, Orlando for $171 and New York at $157.

While discounted airfare, resorts and cruise lines can be found on the Internet, travelers should keep in mind that many agencies will be able to match Internet prices and, in many cases, find even better deals because of exclusive relationships with vendors, Paulus said. Travel consultants are also on hand to assist when travel-disrupting circumstances arise.

“What if you book a flight out of Appleton that runs through Chicago and you find out the Chicago flight has been canceled? What if you have to rebook San Francisco Cruises?”

Piotter said. “Traveling can be stressful enough as it is, so it’s nice to have someone you can call to help when things like this happen.”

Travelocity says book now

europe cruisesWith many airlines expected to reduce capacity later this year, consumers are likely to see price increases as early as this fall. Those who want to take advantage of the abundance of travel deals should do so this summer, Travelocity says.

Travelocity’s most recent data report shows average domestic airfare is $299, down 17 percent from last summer, and the average price of hotels is $142 per night, a decrease of 14 percent. For a family of four, that represents a combined savings of $374 on accommodations and airfare for an average six-night domestic summer vacation.

Similarly, with both domestic and international cruise prices down compared to last year, a family of four can save an average of $847 on passage and lodging for typical Europe Cruises. Because it’s such a tremendous value this summer, most international travelers are deviating from the norm and heading to Western Europe, which has managed to take share from Caribbean Cruises.

“Travelers have been spoiled by cheap travel options and cruise deals this year, and we’re seeing that trend continue into the summer season,” Genevieve Shaw Brown, senior editor for Travelocity, said. “However, travelers should not expect these prices to last forever. With capacity cuts planned for the fall, now is the time to jump on current travel deals.”

Cruise Terminals Turning Green

Broward County Commission gave Port Everglades the okay to begin exploring the possibility of installing cold iron shore-side power at the new cruise terminal 18 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The terminal will be a year-round home port for Royal Caribbean International's Oasis-class ships. If funds allow and the operation is feasible, Port Everglades will become the first seaport on the East Coast of the U.S. to install cold ironing. Learn More about Fort Lauderdale Cruises on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

Cold ironing allows a ship to shut off its engines and operate with shore-side electrical power from Florida Power & Light (FPL) as opposed to burning diesel fuel while the ship is docked in the port.

"I want to applaud our Port Director Phil Allen and his staff for taking the initiative and working with Royal Caribbean to take the lead in this proactive environmental measure," said Stacy Ritter, Broward County Mayor. "This is what we should be doing, leading the way as a county to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases.

Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), parent company of Royal Caribbean International, has expressed an interest in partnering with Broward County and FPL to install the cold ironing infrastructure at Port Everglades, according to Port Everglades Director Phillip C. Allen.

Broward County Commissioner Kristin D. Jacobs explained that by shutting down the engines and using electric shore-side power on the Oasis-class ships, which will be the two largest cruise ships in the world, each ship will experience annual reductions of 40.9 percent less CO2 emissions, 97.7 percent less nitrogen oxide emissions, 95.2 percent less sulfur dioxide emissions, and 88.1 percent less particulate matter.

At Cruise Terminal 18 in Port Everglades, Royal Caribbean and Broward County will connect to the FPL power grid, which will require Broward County to execute a new interconnection agreement with FPL.

"Cold ironing at Port Everglades is an ultra-proactive voluntary measure to protect our environment," Allen said. "The U.S. Navy, and many ports in Alaska like Anchorage Cruises and on the West Coast have used shore-side power successfully to reduce existing pollution from ships.

In November 2009, Port Everglades will become the year-round home port for the first of Royal Caribbean International's Oasis-class of ships, Oasis of the Seas.

The second Oasis-class ship, Allure of the Seas, is scheduled to sail year-round and has many Miami Cruises forming in December 2010.
